Si è appena conclusa l’edizione 2016 del Sundance Film Festival, il più importante festival del cinema indipendente negli Stati Uniti.

Un’edizione che sembra aver soddisfatto molto la critica, con un gran numero di film che si sono fatti notare. Mai come quest’anno, poi, la lotta per le acquisizioni è stata così animata: da un lato Fox Searchlight (che anche questa volta ha acchiappato il titolo caldo) ha battuto ogni record di spesa comprando The Birth of a Nation per oltre 17 milioni di dollari, dall’altro Netflix e Amazon hanno schiacciato gli studios tradizionali facendo incetta di acquisizioni.

Come avvenuto negli ultimi anni (è successo a Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, Whiplash e Fruitvale Station), anche in questa edizione pubblico e giuria hanno concordato, e così sia l’Audience Award che il Grand Jury Prize per un film drammatico sono andati a The Birth of a Nation dell’attore Nate Parker, qui al suo primo lungometraggio da regista. Film da molti giudicato straordinario, che arriva perfettamente in tempo per la grande polemica #OscarsSoWhite: una combo perfetta per Fox Searchlight che potrebbe decidere di puntare su questo film agli Oscar dell’anno prossimo.

Il premio della giuria per la regia è andato a Daniel Scheinert e Daniel Kwan, per il loro Swiss Army Man, mentre Craig Robinson e Melanie Lynskey sono stati premiati per la loro interpretazione rispettivamente in Morris From America e The Intervention.
