Sono state annunciate le nomination ai premi della Writers Guild of America, il sindacato degli sceneggiatori USA. I vincitori verranno annunciati durante la 68esima edizione dei WGA Awards il 13 febbraio. I premi vengono votati dai 12mila membri votanti della WGA, molti dei quali fanno parte dell’Academy: si tratta di una categoria molto influente (circa il 7% del totale). I vincitori del WGA spesso hanno vinto anche l’Oscar per la miglior sceneggiatura originale e adattata.

Tra i film non eleggibili quest’anno (perché per esempio scritti da sceneggiatori non membri del WGA) ma che potrebbero ottenere la nomination all’Oscar ci sono anche The Hateful Eight, Son of Saul, Ex Machina, Mad Max: Fury Road, 99 Homes, The Danish Girl, Room, Anomalisa, Brooklyn, 45 Anni e Me and Earl and the Dying Girl.

L’anno scorso Grand Budapest Hotel vinse il premio WGA ma perse l’Oscar a favore di Birdman, che non venne nominato al premio WGA perché scritto da sceneggiatori non membri della guild.

Sono state anche annunciate le nomination ai premi della American Society of Cinematographers, il sindacato dei direttori della fotografia di Hollywood.

Tra i vari film nominati emergono Mad Max: Fury Road e The Revenant, entrambi presenti anche nelle nomination ai premi della Screen Actors Guild, Producers Guild of America, Art Directors Guild e American Cinema Editors, rispettivamente i premi delle categorie degli attori, produttori, scenografi e montatori. È l’ennesima conferma che i due film avranno ottime possibilità di avere un buon numero di nomination agli Oscar.

Per Emmanuel Lubezki si tratta della sesta nomination all’ASC, mentre è la quinta per John Seale. Lubezki ha vinto quattro ASC awards e due Oscar. Seale ha vinto un ASC e un Oscar per Il Paziente Inglese.

Tra i grandi assenti, Robert Richardson per The Hateful Eight. I film nominati sono stati girati in pellicola 35mm (Il Ponte delle Spie), 16mm (Carol), digitale Arri Alexa (Mad Max e Sicario) e con la nuova Arri Alexa 65 (The Revenant).
