L’Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences ha pubblicato la lista completa dei paesi che hanno proposto un film per l’eventuale candidatura all’Oscar 2020 nella nuova categoria Miglior Film Internazionale (che prende il posto di Miglior Film Straniero). Un film internazionale viene definito tale se è un lungometraggio (deve durare più di 40 minuti) prodotto fuori dagli Stati uniti con dialoghi prevalentemente non in inglese.

Si tratta di 93 candidati (tra i quali compaiono per la prima volta il Ghana, la Nigeria e l’Uzbekistan): il comitato preposto selezionerà 10 finalisti (non più nove) che verranno annunciati il 16 dicembre.

Tra le pellicole vanno evidenziamo ovviamente Il Traditore di Marco Bellocchio per l’Italia, Dolor Y Gloria di Pedro Almodovar per la Spagna, Il ragazzo che catturò il vento di Chiwetel Ejiofor per la Gran Bretagna, Parasite di Bong Joon-ho per la Corea del Sud, Les Misérables di Ladj Ly per la Francia e il film d’animazione La ragazza del Tempo di Makoto Shinkai per il Giappone.
