Composto da 8.200 membri, l’associazione Producers Guild of America utilizza un sistema di voto preferenziale molto simile a quello dell’Academy. I nominati al PGA corrispondono solitamente per tre quarti ai nominati agli Oscar (quest’anno invece parliamo del 100%), e 21 volte in circa 30 anni c’è stata coincidenza tra i due premi come miglior film. L’anno scorso Green Book fu premiato ai PGA, mentre due anni fa toccò a La Forma dell’Acqua: in entrambi i casi questo spianò la strada per la vittoria agli Oscar.
Prodotto e finanziato da Amblin Partners e New Republic, 1917 è distribuito da Universal e recentemente ha vinto il Golden Globe come miglior film drammatico.
“Grazie ille, Producers Guild. Questo film è stato ispirato da mio nonno,” ha commentato Mendes sul palco, “e la mia speranza era soprattutto rendere onore alla sua esperienza. E rendo onore al lavoro di ogni singolo membro della troupe e del cast.”
Sul fronte animazione è stato premiato Toy Story 4, mentre come documentario il premio è andato ad Apollo 11. Ted Sarandos di Netflix ha ricevuto il Milestone Award, mentre Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner e Jeremy Kleiner della Plan B hanno ricevuto il David O. Selznick Achievement in Theatrical Motion Pictures, e infine Octavia Spencer è stata premiata con il Visionary Award.
