Si è svolta stasera la 75 esima edizione dei BAFTA, i riconoscimenti assegnati dagli oltre 7000 membri della British Adacemy of Film and Television Arts e che vanno a riconoscere i meriti dell’industria cinematografica inglese: Dune e Il potere del cane sono stati i principali vincitori quest’anno, con il primo che ha ottenuto un gran numero di premi tecnici. La cerimonia, che solitamente si tiene una settimana prima degli Oscar, è stata posizionata più in anticipo quest’anno: l’idea è che i BAFTA e i Critics’ Choice Awards, che cercano rimpiazzare i Golden Globe (in un momento in cui la Hollywood Foreign Press è in grande difficoltà) in termini di importanza, puntino a influenzare i membri dell’Academy a pochi giorni dall’apertura delle votazioni finali. Va sottolineato che molti membri dell’Academy votano anche ai BAFTA, essendo inglesi, e quindi in parte i vincitori di questi premi possono riflettere gli Oscar.

In questo senso, esce rafforzatissimo Il potere del cane, dopo che ieri Jane Campion ha vinto il DGA come miglior regista. Delle otto nomination del film Netflix, solo due si sono tradotte in premi, ma sono fondamentali: miglior film e miglior regista. Dune, nominato a 11 BAFTA, ne ha portati a casa cinque tecnici. West Side Story ha vinto due premi, ovvero migliore attrice non protagonista Ariana DeBose e miglior casting. CODA – I segni del cuore, outsider degli Oscar, ha ricevuto due BAFTA: miglior attore non protagonista Troy Kotsur e miglior sceneggiatura adattata. Joanna Scanlan ha vinto il BAFTA come migliore attrice per After Love, Will Smith quello come miglior attore per Una famiglia vincente – King Richard. Belfast è stato nominato miglior film inglese, mentre Paul Thomas Anderson ha vinto il BAFTA per la migliore sceneggiatura originale per Licorice Pizza. Miglior film d’animazione Encanto, mentre miglior film internazionale Drive my Car.
