Fin dal 2016, Hollywood non ha mai visto particolarmente di buon occhio la presidenza Trump (nonostante la riforma fiscale promossa dai Repubblicani abbia beneficiato le major e le media company), e questo nonostante il tycoon abbia un forte legame con il mondo dello spettacolo (basti pensare al reality The Apprentice). Una contrapposizione che si è manifestata con l'intenzione di Trump di eliminare il National Endowment for the Arts e il National Endowment for the Humanities nel suo budget del 2021. Inoltre, come noto, ha interrotto la sua partecipazione al Kennedy Center Honors, gala annuale in onore degli artisti.
Hollywood sta anche pagando cara la pandemia di Coronavirus: a Los Angeles e New York i cinema sono chiusi da marzo, i parchi a tema sono paralizzati e i palinsesti televisivi sono stati rivoluzionati a causa dello stop di alcuni mesi alle riprese. In molti giudicano la gestione della situazione da parte di Trump alquanto deludente, e la speranza è che Biden inserisca anche Hollywood nei suoi piani per uno stimolo economico dopo la pandemia.La campagna elettorale, una delle più dure e combattute degli ultimi decenni, ha visto quindi una vera e propria mobilitazione di star tra attori, registi e personaggi dello spettacolo che da un lato sensibilizzavano i cittadini americani ad andare a votare, dall'altro in molti casi si sbilanciavano proprio a favore di Biden (non ultimo, Dwayne Johnson).
