Narra di un impresario di pompe funebri, il quale arriva in Cina, nel 1937, per seppellire un prete. Ha però la sfortuna di arrivare in concomitanza con le forze Giapponesi, le quali tentano di conquistare il territorio. L'impresario dovrà, per salvarsi dalla prigionia, fingere di essere un prete, praticando nella stessa chiesa che ha visto la morte del prete precedente. La chiesa svolge anche la funzione di scuola per ragazze, ed egli, arrivati i soldati desiderosi d'intrattenersi con le fanciulle, dovrà decidere se entrare o meno in questo gioco di guerra.

Diviso nettamente in due con un primo tempo che mostra tutte le stupende potenzialità gettate alle ortiche nel secondo, il primo film davvero americo-cinese è una delusione...
