I premi, storicamente, contano più per il valore glamour che per la reale influenza sugli Oscar: quest’anno verranno consegnati domenica 11 gennaio (dopo che le votazioni per le nomination agli Oscar si saranno concluse, l’8 gennaio) durante una cerimonia condotta da Tina Fey e Amy Poehler.
Sul fronte cinematografico è andato tutto più o meno come previsto: hanno fatto incetta di nomination Birdman (7), Boyhood di Richard Linklater (5) e The Imitation Game (5), soddisfazione anche per Grand Budapest Hotel (4), Gone Girl (4), La Teoria del Tutto (4) e Selma (4, dopo essere stato snobbato dalla Screen Actors Guild a causa della mancata proiezione del film a molti membri della guild). Colpisce la nomination a David Fincher per Gone Girl, che invece non ottiene la nomination come miglior film, mentre Unbroken di Angelina Jolie e American Sniper di Clint Eastwood sono stati completamente ignorati.
