Come ogni anno vi ricordiamo che i due premi hanno molto poco in comune: gli Spirit sono dedicati al cinema indipendente americano, mentre gli Oscar sono il premio dell’industria. Ma negli ultimi anni queste due linee apparentemente parallele hanno visto diverse convergenze, con gli Oscar che spessissimo hanno premiato film che avevano trionfato poche ore prima agli Spirit: basti pensare a Spotlight un anno fa. La La Land, il grande favorito agli Oscar di quest’anno, non poteva essere candidato agli Spirit essendo costato 30 milioni di dollari: il limite massimo di budget per essere considerato un film indipendente è 20 milioni di dollari.
Quest’anno probabilmente non accadrà la stessa cosa, e i sei premi ottenuti da Moonlight dovrebbero confermarlo: vero e proprio prodotto indipendente, è costato 1.5 milioni di dollari e sin da quando è stato presentato al Telluride Film Festival a settembre 2016 ha conquistato la critica. La pellicola ha vinto come miglior film, miglior regia e miglior sceneggiatura, oltre alla miglior fotografia, il miglior montaggio e il premio Robert Altman. I premi per le interpretazioni sono stati divisi “equamente” tra Manchester by the Sea, Elle, Other People e Hell or High Water, mentre The Witch ha ottenuto due riconoscimenti come miglior film d’esordio e miglior prima sceneggiatura.
