L'American Film Institute ha decretato i dieci migliori film del 2008. Come sempre, l'associazione ha scelto alcuni film molto popolari e altre produzioni più indipendenti, ignorando tuttavia The Millionaire che da molti è considerato uno dei favoriti all'Oscar. Ecco la lista:

- Frost/Nixon
- Frozen River
- Gran Torino
- Iron Man
- Milk
- WALL-E
- Wendy and Lucy
- The Wrestler
Intanto continuano a essere assegnati i vari premi della critica. Questo weekend è toccato ai critici di Boston e a quelli di New York. I primi hanno premiato come miglior film Wall•E (è il secondo premio che guadagna il film Pixar, il che farebbe pensare a qualche chance per una nomination come miglior film agli Oscar, ma ci sono ancora molti dubbi), a parimerito con The Millionaire, così come parimerito è andato miglior attore:
- Best Movie: Wall•E / The Millionaire
- Best Actor: Sean Penn (Milk), Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler)
- Best Actress: Sally Hawkins for Happy-Go-Lucky
- Best Supporting Actor: Heath Ledger for The Dark Knight
- Best Supporting Actress: Penélope Cruz for Vicky Cristina Barcelona
- Best Director: Gus Van Sant for Milk and Paranoid Park
- Best Screenplay: Dustin Lance Black for Milk
- Best Cinematography: Christopher Doyle and Rain Kathy Li for Paranoid Park
- Best Documentary: Man on Wire
- Best Foreign-Language Film: Let the Right One In
- Best Animated Film: WALL•E
- Best Film Editing: Chris Dickens for Slumdog Millionaire
- Best New Filmmaker: Martin McDonagh for In Bruges
- Best Ensemble Cast: Tropic Thunder
…Una delle poche certezze degli Oscar 2009 è il premio a Heath Ledger postumo, almeno così sembra a giudicare dal fatto che non c'è premio della critica (e aggiungiamoci il Golden Globe) che non lo metta come miglior attore non protagonista. Anche a New York l'attore è stato premiato, mentre The Millionaire ha trionfato come miglior film e regista:

I Satellite sono i premi dell'International Press Academy: fondata nel 1996, si differenzia dall'Hollywood Foreign Press Association (quella dei Golden Globe, per intendersi) perché riunisce la maggior parte dei responsabili della stampa di intrattenimento del Mondo.

Le premiazioni dei Golden Globes si terranno l'11 gennaio 2009, le nomination agli Oscar verranno annunciate il 22 gennaio alle 5.30 del mattino (ora del Pacifico); l'81esima edizione degli Academy Awards si terrà invece il 22 febbraio, presentata da Hugh Jackman.
