Quasi snobbato anche quest'anno dagli Oscar, Lo Hobbit: la Desolazione di Smaug ha ottenuto ben otto nomination ai Saturn Awards, proprio come Gravity. I due film sono i più nominati alla 40esima edizione dei premi della Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films.

Appena dietro, Hunger Games: la Ragazza di Fuoco ottiene sette nomination, mentre Iron Man 3, Pacific Rim, Into Darkness: Star Trek e Thor: the Dark World ne ottengono cinque.

Novità sul fronte delle categorie: sono state infatti aggiunte due nuove sezioni, ovvero "Miglior trasposizione da fumetto a film", che quest'anno include L'Uomo d'Acciaio, Iron Man 3, Thor: the Dark World e Wolverine l'Immortale, e "Miglior attore giovane in una serie televisiva".

Tra le nomination "particolari" quella di Scarlett Johansson come Migliore attrice non protagonista per Her. Complessivamente, la Warner Bros. ha ottenuto 33 nomination, la Universal 18 e la Disney 10.
