Si sono tenuti questa notte i premi Emmy, gli Oscar della televisione americana, che hanno assegnato premi in 26 categorie (il 21 agosto sono stati assegnati premi per altre 74 categorie, durante i Creative Arts Awards).
C'era grande attesa per i premi più importanti: tra i più nominati c'erano show ormai già pluripremiati come Mad Men e 30 Rock, ma nuove serie come Glee e Modern Family avevano fatto il pieno di nomination, lasciando sperare in una ventata di aria fresca.
E' andata così, ma non del tutto. Alla fine, nella categoria miglior serie-commedia, lo show distribuito dalla ABC Modern Family (ma realizzato da Fox TV) ha battuto gli altri favoriti (in particolare Glee, altro show realizzato dalla Fox TV, che torna a casa con soli due premi – più due della premiazione Creative Arts Emmy della settimana scorsa) e ha vinto cinque riconoscimenti (per un totale di 7 Emmy, due li ha presi ai Creative). Completamente senza premi 30 Rock, che per tre anni aveva fatto piazza pulita. Glee ha tuttavia dominato l'apertura del programma, con un numero musicale molto divertente:
Sul lato delle serie drammatiche, invece, Mad Men ha vinto ancora una volta prendendo riconoscimenti anche nelle categorie della sceneggiatura, ma saltando a pié pari quelle recitative.
Il premio come miglior attore in una serie drammatica è andato a Bryan Cranston, per Breaking Bad; a sorpresa, la migliore attrice in una serie drammatica è stata Kyra Sedgwick (nominata per la quinta volta per The Closer). Dopo la delusione dell'anno scorso, atteso riconoscimento per Jim Parsons e per il successo di Big Bang Theory: l'attore ha ricevuto il premio come migliore attore in una serie-commedia (qui sotto il suo discorso di accettazione), mentre la migliore attrice in una serie-commedia è stata Edie Falco (Nurse Jackie).
Nelle categorie di supporto, Jane Lynch ha vinto per Glee (un premio previsto da molti), mentre Eric Stonestreet per Modern Family.
Nessun addio per Lost: l'ultima stagione della celebre serie della ABC non ha vinto nemmeno un premio.
Le serie che hanno vinto più premi sono state The Pacific (otto premi, compreso miglior miniserie) e Temple Grandin (sette premi); The Daily Show mantiene il record anche quest'anno vincendo l'ottavo premio consecutivo. I network più premiati sono stati la HBO (25 premi), la ABC (18 premi), la Fox (11 premi) e la CBS (10 premi).
