Sono state annunciate oggi le nomination alla 39 esima edizione dei Film Independent Spirit Awards, i premi del cinema indipendente americano. Decise da un comitato di una cinquantina di membri e successivamente votate dagli oltre 6.000 membri dell’associazione Film Independent, le nomination riguardano film prodotti negli Stati Uniti con un budget inferiore ai 28 milioni di dollari, e stavolta la premiazione si terrà il 25 febbraio 2023, nel bel mezzo delle votazioni degli Oscar, lasciando aperto lo spiraglio per qualche influenza sulle decisioni dell’Academy.

Negli anni abbiamo visto Oscar e Spirit rincorrersi sempre di più, diventando in più di un’occasione l’uno il riflesso dell’altro, in linea con una tendenza che vuole l’Academy nominare sempre più spesso film impegnati, indipendenti, con budget o incassi contenuti. Nel 2021 Nomadland aveva trionfato sia agli Spirit che agli Oscar. Nel 2022, invece, gli Spirit hanno preso una direzione diversa, premiando come miglior film La figlia oscura, che non era stato neanche nominato al relativo Oscar. Nel 2023, una produzione indipendente con valori da blockbuster come Everything Everywhere All At Once ha trionfato sia agli Spirit che agli Oscar.

Nel 2024 le cose dovrebbero andare diversamente, anche e soprattutto perché agli Oscar torneranno ad avere grande visibilità importanti blockbuster come Oppenheimer, Killers of the Flower Moon e Barbie. Ma anche film impegnati come Maestro, Povere creature e Nyad non possono figurare nelle nomination agli Spirit per via del loro budget: ecco quindi che a dominare le candidature ci sono film indipendenti acclamati dalla critica e dai festival come American Fiction, May December e Past Lives, assieme a Estranei, Passages e We Grown Now. Delusione per Lezioni di vita – The Holdovers di Alexander Payne, che ha ottenuto diverse nomination ma non quella come miglior film.

Rispetto ad altri premi, gli Spirit propongono categorie genderless per gli attori, unite sotto un’unica categoria “migliore interpretazione da protagonista” e “migliore interpretazione da non protagonista”.

Da notare che il distributore più nominato, quest’anno, è l’indipendente A24, con 11 candidature. Segue Netflix con 10.
