La piattaforma streaming festeggia non solo un grandissimo numero di Emmy (tra Primetime e Creative parliamo di ben 44 statuette), ma anche i suoi primi premi per la miglior serie drammatica (la quarta stagione di The Crown) e la miglior miniserie (La Regina degli Scacchi, che aveva dominato ai Creative Emmy). Apple TV+, per contro, ha ottenuto l’Emmy per la miglior serie comedy con la prima stagione di Ted Lasso, diventando lo streamer a ricevere più rapidamente in assoluto uno dei premi principali (è infatti solo il secondo anno che la neonata piattaforma partecipa).
Sul fronte della recitazione The Crown, Ted Lasso e Omicidio a EastTown si sono spartiti quasi tutti i premi. Per The Crown, Josh O’Connor, Olivia Colman sono stati premiati come migliori attori in una serie drammatica, Tobias Menzies e Gillian Anderson come migliori attori non protagonisti in una serie drammatica e Claire Foy come miglior guest star in una serie drammatica. Per Ted Lasso, Jason Sudeikis ha ottenuto l’Emmy come miglior attore in una comedy, Brett Goldstein e Hannah Waddingham quelli come migliori attori non protagonisti in una comedy. Per Omicidio a EastTown, Kate Winslet è stata premiata come migliore attrice in una miniserie, Evan Peters e Julianne Nicholson come migliori attori non protagonisti in una miniserie. Oltre a loro, Ewan McGregor è stato premiato come miglior attore in una miniserie per Halston, Jean Smart come migliore attrice in una comedy per Hacks.
Sono stati stabiliti ulteriori record in una notte nella quale molti dei pronostici si sono rivelati corretti. Jessica Hobbs e Lucia Aniello hanno rispettivamente vinto l’Emmy per la miglior regia in una serie drammatica e comedy (The Crown e Hacks): è la prima volta che due donne vengono premiate in contemporanea in queste categorie. Scott Frank ha ottenuto quello per la regia di una miniserie per La regina degli scacchi. RuPaul Charles, per contro, è diventato la persona di colore a ottenere più Emmy in assoluto: nel corso di quattro anni consecutivi, ha ricevuto sei premi tra Primetime e Creative Emmy per RuPaul’s Drag Race. La settimana scorsa ha ottenuto quello come miglior conduttore di un reality, e ai Primetime la tredicesima stagione ha ottenuto quello come miglior reality. “Grazie a tutti i nostri amati figli che partecipano alla serie in tutto il mondo,” ha commentato ricevendo il premio. “Sono così gentili a raccontare le loro storie di coraggio su come affrontare una vita che diventa ancora più difficile oggi. Per voi ragazzi, che ci seguite, sappiate che c’è una tribù che vi attende. E noi ti aspettiamo, baby. Venite da Mama Ru!”

E a proposito di record, HULU purtroppo registra un primato negativo: 21 nomination agli Emmy ricevute, 21 premi persi, tra cui quello per la miglior serie drammatica per The Handmaid’s Tale. Tra le delusioni della serata, sicuramente le serie di genere: The Mandalorian (24 nomination), WandaVision (23 nomination), Lovecraft Country (18 nomination) e The Boys (6 nomination) si sono dovute accontentare principalmente di premi tecnici ai Creative Arts Emmys la settimana scorsa. Ma è stata anche una serata deludente per gli attori neri, asiatici, latinoamericani e LGBTQ+, come sottolineato sui social (c’è chi ha criticato la vittoria di Ewan McGregor per la sua interpretazione in Halston). Questo nonostante le nomination fossero molto diversificate (si è molto parlato di possibili premi per Billy Porter e MJ Rodriguez per l’ultima stagione di Pose, o allo scomparso Michael K Williams per Lovecraft Country, mentre Michaela Coel è stata premiata per la sceneggiatura di I May Destroy You). L’unico attore afroamericano premiato è stato Courtney B. Vance come guest star in Lovecraft Country.
